Tourism certainly represents one of Cambodia's main opportunities for rebuilding its economy. It is helped by having an exceptional asset in the temple complex at Angkor in the Siem Reap region - one of the seven wonders of the world and a part of global heritage. Our tourism development, however, will not be confined to the enhancement of one archaeological site. We are pursuing an overall strategy which, while emphasizing the attractio n of Angkor, covers the tourism development for the entire country. A country richly endowed with a wide range of scenic, cultural and historical attractions.
| Potential | Policy | Statistics | Opportunities | Activities |
First of all because the country will not be starting from scratch; it will be renewing a tradition that existed before the tragic years it has endured. Cambodia has so much to offer. The rich cultural and historic heritage, the world renowned Angkor Wat, unspoiled beaches, coral islands and beautiful mountains and forests make Ca mbodia a unique travel destination.
Second, and above all, because Cambodia belongs to the region with the strongest tourism growth in the world. According to WTO forecasts, tourist flows in the Asia-Pacific region in the current decade should grow at an annual rate of some 7 per cent, about double the average estimated for the world as a whole.
Third, Tourism may enable the Royal government to create economic activity and, to some extent, eliminate poverty, even in remote areas living by traditional farming alone. Tourism, together with timber, rubber and gems, is one of the rare sources of convertible currency available in the short term. The Royal Government has issued the appropriate policy for tourism development.
The Royal Government of Cambodia has economic interests in Tourism. The Government's policy is as follows:
